Teaching life skills to autistic youth: combining work experience with animals and nature

Young people from Inscape House School got a private tour to Dunham Massey and an invitation to join their team for work experience in September. The enthusiastic volunteers from National Trust told us all about the park, the resident deer and how current work experience students Jake and Talia have fun working in the park.

Increasing skills and knowledge by volunteering at the Together Trust

Tahira Poswal works at one of our schools, Inscape House, as a reading support volunteer working on a 1 to 1 basis with students. Tahira helps the students with reading and numeracy and has been filling this role now for a few months.

Marie's story: I faced pressure to move

Marie spoke to us about her time in unregulated accommodation before moving to the Together Trust and her experience of moving to independence.  

I was in and out of emergency placements because they couldn’t find anywhere to place me, so my social worker took me to a caravan in Preston, which called a crisis placement. She said I would be there for 28 days, but I was there for 12 weeks and 3 days. The whole time I didn’t see any of my friends, I didn’t go to school, I didn’t see anyone.

Johnny's story: the staff are like my family

Johnny was in our care 15 years ago. We spoke to him about his relationships with staff and how they have made an impact on his life. 

I was in several different care homes before I came to the Together Trust, once there I met a lot of amazing staff who took great pride in their work and certain staff members made a difference for me. They didn’t know it at the time, and nor did I, but they were influencing my future.

Inscape Art Department has plenty to celebrate!

There have been multiple reasons to celebrate for art students at Inscape House School with recognition for their fantastic work coming in various shapes and sizes. While the current healthcare pandemic has put a hold on the majority of school and college work across the country, a number of students from Inscape have been able to complete their projects and start planning for what their future holds.

Jacob hits top gear to help Inscape School

Jacob Milward is a student at Inscape House School, the Together Trust school that breaks down barriers to learning for children and young people with autism. When Jacob realised that there was a gap in accessibility in transport at the school he was determined to help solve the matter. So, here’s Jacob’s story, and it’s a good one.

Bridge College are celebrating Deaf Awareness week and this year's theme is, acquired deafness. Acquired deafness is where a person develops hearing loss at some time during their life, as opposed to at birth. When it is present at birth, it is known as congenital deafness.

Together Trust occupational therapist steps up to tackle eating disorder in vulnerable children

Rachel Peek is an occupational therapist at the Together Trust and though she’s only been in post for a little over a year she’s already made her mark in her field, having recently had an article published in Occupational Therapy News magazine about the eating disorder Pica.

Pica is characterised by a tendency to eat substances that provide no nutritive value such as soil, chalk, hair or paper.

“As a medical condition it’s been diagnosed in pregnant women, in those with and iron deficiency and in patients who have a mental health condition” Rachel explained.

2020 - 150 years of the Together Trust

In 2020 the Together Trust is celebrating 150 years of continuous service to children and families in the North West of England.

We’ve come a long way since 1870, when Leonard Shaw and Richard Taylor founded a ‘Night Refuge for Homeless boys’ on Quay Street in Manchester.  In the 150 years that followed we added new homes, opened our doors to girls as well as boys, went through names changes, added new services for our communities and opened schools, training and emigration schemes and a fostering service.

We were treated to a moving speech at today's AGM from Inscape student, Ethan, where he talked about how much of a difference the Together Trust and staff at Inscape have made to his life. Around 40 people were at the event, including staff, trustees, governors and Salford ceremonial mayor and Stockport ceremonial mayors and mayoress.
