Impact of cost of living on disabled households – Autumn Statement letter

Today, the Together Trust, in partnership with Voluntary Organisations Disability Group (VODG) and 74 other national and regional disability charities, have written a joint letter to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP.

The letter urgently calls for action in the Autumn Statement to address the ongoing cost of living crisis affecting disabled households across the UK. 

As winter approaches, disabled people are grappling with low incomes and soaring expenses for heating, food, transport, and essential items, pushing many to the brink.

Award winning disability vlogger visits specialist college in Openshaw

Award-winning vlogger and disability advocate, Isaac Harvey, visited Bridge College in Openshaw this week to share his ‘This ability’ message with students.

The influencer, who was born with a form of limb hypoplasia, is a powerful advocate of what disabled people can achieve and uses his videos to inspire millions of followers. 

Natasha, 23 and Jamal, 17, gave Isaac a tour of the college and its facilities. 

The college is part of the charity Together Trust and supports 16- to 25-year-olds with disabilities, complex needs and autism.

Disability charity calls on parents to share their views of SEND services

Leading North West disability charity, Together Trust, is calling on parents of children with special educational needs and disability (SEND) to share their views on children’s services.

The charity is collecting views from parents and carers about what it is like navigating the SEND system on behalf of their child. The Together Trust will use this feedback to influence the government's review of SEND services.

Leading North West disability charity, The Together Trust, has strengthened its board with the appointment of seven trustees.

The new members, Gani Martins, Geoff Durbin, Jane Walapu, Jane Grime, Lyndsey Stark, Marcell Edwards and Nick Lowry each bring a wealth of expertise and lived experience to the organisation. 

The Together Trust cares for and champions the rights, needs and ambitions of care-experienced children and people with disabilities, autism and mental health differences.

The High Court of Justice has found that the government acted lawfully when it banned care-less accommodation for children aged 15 and under without extending protections to 16- and 17-year-olds. The ruling was made in the Article39 v Secretary of State case yesterday by Judge Holgate.

Today, a group of care experienced individuals have come together under the campaigning name ‘ShowUsYouCareToo’ to ask the Independent Review for Children’s Social Care, headed by Josh MacAlister, to recommend that care experience becomes a protected characteristic in law. The group are appealing to care experienced people alongside the general public to co-sign their open letter.

Leading North West disability charity welcomes new Chair of Trustees

Leading North West disability charity the Together Trust is delighted to welcome Giles Gaddum as their new chair of trustees. 

The Cheshire based business owner is the fifth member of the Gaddum family to serve on the board of the Together Trust.

The family have supported the charity since 1902 when Henry Theodore Gaddum took the position of trustee. His son Harry followed in his father’s footsteps and in 1920 he became the first member of the family to chair the board.

Ashcroft School students have a heart for NHS workers and patients

Students at Ashcroft Services, the Together Trust school that supports children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs, have been getting crafty to show their support for frontline NHS staff and Covid-19 patients at Wythenshawe hospital.

The project was led by Angela Daniels, a learning support assistant at the school. Angela said: “Everyone here at Ashcroft is very grateful to our local NHS frontline staff and we’ve all been keen to show this, especially the children.

The competition is being run by the Together Trust’s Bridge College and is being judged by Paul Coates, the Print Editor at the Manchester Evening News.

Response to University of London research on care leavers and premature deaths

The findings of the University College London research is heartbreaking but is not surprising. Care experienced people deserve the best possible life chances, but they tell us they continue to feel stigmatised and alienated from society.

We know from our own findings that mental health is one of the biggest worries for care experienced people and that the impact of the care system on their wellbeing extends beyond the age of 25.
