Inscape students hit the airwaves
Students from Inscape House School have been hitting the airwaves across Manchester on ALLFM 96.9FM, a radio station offering young people the chance to learn about presenting and producing radio.
Every week the students plan, prepare and record an hour-long radio show that airs on AllFM on Monday drive time at 4 pm.
At Inscape House School, work experience is an integral part of the students’ curriculum, with almost all young people aged 16 – 18 at the school taking part in work experience each week.
Marie Young, an employability teacher and work experience co-ordinator at Inscape, said “It’s all about developing young people’s confidence and giving them a chance to explore what they might like to do in the future.
“We really want to change attitudes towards hiring young people with autism and show employers the benefits of having a neurodiverse workforce.”
From radio presenting to hospitality or working in a software firm, students are able to develop their skills and confidence in real work environments. These opportunities are an invaluable experience for both the young person and the employer.
Marie explained:
“My personal challenge is to find the perfect fit for each student. We look at their passions, skills and what they want to do in the future and try to find an opportunity that’s right for them.”
Together Trust are always looking for more local businesses to provide work experience placements or taster days for their students and the young people they support.
