Janet got in touch to share her memories and to try and reconnect with others who volunteered at the time. Do you know someone who worked at the school in 1978?
Janet says,
I am writing to share some fond memories of my time with the charity, and to see if you might have any photographic archives from that era that I could browse.
In 1978, when I was just 17 years old, I worked as a volunteer at Bethesda School on Schools Hill in Cheadle. I have such vivid memories of the beautiful, extensive grounds, the wonderful Bonfire Night celebrations, and the grand summer fêtes that were opened by local personalities. I particularly remember the unique mix of children back then—the local day pupils who arrived on the school buses and the residential boarders who stayed on-site.
I have vivid memories of one of the on-site medical staff from that time—a nurse named Mrs. Jenkins. She was a lovely local connection for me, as I actually went to school with her daughter!
That single volunteering experience at Bethesda completely sparked my life’s passion. It led me directly into a lifelong career supporting children with special educational needs, which I loved all the way up until my retirement.
Thank you for continuing to preserve the wonderful history of the school.
