Learning through fur, feathers and fins: World Animal Day 2025 at Inscape House School

Last month, the halls of Inscape House School were buzzing with excitement as students came together to mark World Animal Day – a global event held every year on 4 October to raise awareness for animal rights and welfare.

Led by our award-winning Animal-Assisted Intervention (AAI) practitioner, Danielle Eaton, the event transformed the school into an animal-themed wonderland, filled with fun, learning, and discovery.

Dive into the deep

Students explored the mysteries of the sea at a station dedicated to marine life. Fascinating facts about octopuses and crabs sparked awe and curiosity. Did you know the largest octopus ever recorded was a Giant Pacific Octopus weighing 600 pounds with 33-foot-long tentacles?

Turtles, eggs and a special guest

Another station focused on turtle life cycles, where students got hands-on with a mock turtle egg and tested their knowledge by guessing the gender based on its incubation temperature. Plus, they got to say a warm hello to Davey, Inscape House School’s very own tortoise and a beloved part of our AAI sessions.

Protecting our oceans

The impact of plastic pollution on ocean life was brought to light through interactive displays, helping students understand the importance of protecting our seas and marine creatures.

The buzz about bees

In another corner, students learned about the life cycle of bees, where honey comes from, and even discovered that ancient Egyptians and Romans used honey as medicine. Sweet and educational!

Playful learning

Students enjoyed waterplay stations, sea animal toys, and had a blast dressing up in animal-themed costumes. For those who didn’t come in costume, we had plenty to choose from!

Say ‘cheese’ at the sea!

An ocean-themed photo corner let students strike a pose with sea creature props, creating lasting memories of the day.

A feathered surprise

Adding to the excitement, one student brought in a special guest: Holly the bird! Students were thrilled to meet her and learn that in some bird species, feather colour can reveal their gender… a real-life science lesson with feathers and flair!

Danielle Eaton shared her thoughts on the day:

“World Animal Day is a great opportunity for our students to connect with animals in a meaningful way. It’s not just about learning fun facts, it’s also about understanding the challenges animals face and what we can do to help protect them.”

From tortoises to turtles, bees to birds, World Animal Day at Inscape House School was a roaring success, full of learning, laughter, and love for the animal kingdom.
