Greater Manchester’s Transport Strategy and Delivery Plan: What it means for inaccessible train stations near our services

Background

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority has published the Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2050 and Delivery Plan Consultation

These important documents set out ambitious plans to transform transport across the region over the long term.

The survey consultation is open until 11:59pm on Monday 9 March 2026.

Train stations in the delivery plan for step-free access

Reddish North station

This station is especially significant to us. It is where Nathaniel Yates, a grassroots accessibility campaigner, began his campaign for step‑free access.

Nathaniel told us: “Eight years of hard work, eight years of determination – it’s finally going to be done.”

Together Trust has supported Nathaniel in his campaigning activity over the past few years, and we welcome this important step forward.

About train stations located near the Together Trust services

“It’s encouraging to see several stations near our services included in the Delivery Plan. However, it is disappointing that Ashburys and Reddish South train stations are not. Both still lack step‑free access, and no upgrades are currently planned.

These stations are close to two of our services: Bridge College, our specialist education setting for disabled students aged 16-25, and Norvent, our therapeutic home for children with emotional, behavioural or learning disabilities. Accessible stations are essential for the children, young people and adults we support. Without them, many are excluded from travel, independence and opportunity.” – Styliana Pasiardi, Policy and Campaigns Manager

We will respond to the consultation

As part of our ongoing work to improve rail accessibility, the campaigns team will be submitting a response to the consultation.

We have contacted our services located near inaccessible stations to gather feedback on how this affects the children, young people, adults and colleagues who use – or avoid using – their local train station. Any insights will help strengthen the case for urgent accessibility improvements.

Get involved

If you have experience with any of the train stations shown in the graphic – whether positive or negative – we would love to hear from you. Your insight will help strengthen our response.
