Curiosity in action: How Inscape House School brought science to life

This month, Inscape House School’s community came together to mark Science Week – an occasion dedicated to celebrating the joy of learning and the pursuit of understanding the world around us. This year’s theme, “Curiosity”, set the tone for a thoughtful and engaging programme of activities that brought students and colleagues together in the spirit of scientific enquiry.

The centrepiece of the week was Science Day, where the school hall was transformed into an interactive space for scientific exploration, thoughtfully designed by the science team and rooted in Inscape House School’s diverse curriculum. Students attended in groups, each engaging with a range of hands-on activities.

Allan Nellemann, one of the science teachers who led the event, captured the spirit of the day perfectly: “We set up nine different tables covering biology, chemistry and physics. We asked questions and encouraged students to test out the theories for themselves – and they engaged really well.”

At the smoke gun station, students explored whether they could construct a device capable of propelling air bullets, while the sink or float activity invited them to make and test predictions about objects in water. A car ramp experiment encouraged observation of how surfaces affect the movement of a toy car, and the slime station presented the satisfying challenge of producing a mixture that would not stick to the fingers.

Students also had the opportunity to examine specimens under microscopes, drawing on their powers of observation. The balloon car station explored air-powered propulsion, while the excavation activity invited students to uncover a hidden animal with patience and precision. The match the animal station encouraged reflection on shared characteristics across different species. The day was rounded off by the Van de Graaff generator, which demonstrated the remarkable effects of static electricity.

The enthusiasm of students was clear throughout the day. Kai, one of our students, summed it up well: “Science Week teaches us all about the science that’s all around us – how fossils are found, why animals have different features, why our bodies work the way they do. Our amazing science teachers help us understand more about the world, and it’s been a really wonderful day.”

Science Week at Inscape House School was a fitting celebration of curiosity – a reminder that when given space to flourish, the capacity for discovery is truly remarkable.
