Last month, pupils and staff at Inscape House School had a special guest and dressed up as their favourite fictional characters to celebrate one of the most exciting events in the school calendar – World Book Day.

Transformed into Among Us, Billionaire Boy, Demon Dentist, Ratburger and Gangsta Granny characters, the young enthusiasts and teachers were delighted to welcome Chris Bonnello on the day – an autistic writer, novelist and author of the ‘Underdogs’ book series, who led a fiction writing workshop and taught the students how he brings up new ideas, convincing characters and vivid fictional worlds. The students were challenged to let their imagination run wild and use a range of literary techniques and language to demonstrate their storytelling skills.

“I really enjoyed today’s session because I got to make up my own story.”

– *Markus, a primary school pupil

“I love reading books, so I found the workshops today very enjoyable. If we talk about novels, my favourite one has to be ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’.”

– *Maggie, Post-16 student

The young people excelled at coming up with their own weird and wacky adventure stories whilst having the chance to explore questions and ideas one-to-one with the guest speaker, who shared:

“It’s always a pleasure doing visits to schools. Students at Inscape House School have shown themselves to be extremely creative in the wild range of ideas they have been able to come up with and the stories they have produced as a result. One of the best things about all the visits is getting an insight into the creative brains I’m working with, and I certainly got that here.”

Inscape House School is looking forward to welcoming the award-winning poet and lyricist Terry Caffrey in May to keep spreading a love of books and reading among our young people.
