Students from the Together Trust\u2019s specialist education settings were given a fantastic opportunity last week with a very special train journey from Bury Bolton Street station. The wonderful opportunity to take a trip on the Flying Scotsman came as the iconic train celebrated it\u2019s 100th<\/sup> birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students were given the chance to learn more about the rail network to consider a future in engineering and provide an exciting and sensory day out. They were given the chance to not only take the 90 minute trip on the train but also talk to rail staff, learn more about the Flying Scotsman and its history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Flying Scotsman is one of the grandest steam trains in the world, running for 100 years now. It was great to see the legend itself in action\u201d<\/p>\n– James, Post-16 student at Inscape House School<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Set up for International Women\u2019s Day, the event also worked towards combatting the gender imbalance in engineering roles. Event\u2019s such as this and many others around IWD aimed to encourage young women into a rewarding career in engineering through providing information about jobs that had previously looked closed off.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was set up through an industry first partnership between the Together Trust and Atkins, through which Atkins are placing a minimum of 44 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Careers Link Governors at Primary Schools, Girls Schools, in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) settings and in schools of areas of high deprivation to directly tackle the skills and diversity crisis in Engineering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe new relationship we\u2019ve started with Atkins is generating some very exciting ideas and opportunities to enrich our young people\u2019s experience. This is collaboration and partnership working at its best. Thank you Atkins for all your support and cooperation. Atkins Governors will deliver ongoing curriculum enrichment at 44 schools for a minimum of 4 years to support the development of high quality, job-ready young people who will form part of a reliable pipeline of talent from the classroom, straight into entry-level roles within Atkins, their supply chain and on their major projects. Off the back of the Flying Scotsman event, Atkins are in conversation with one learner about a work experience placement on an Atkins project which is looking at the signalling fitout of two heritage locomotives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connected through Atkins\u2019 Governors for Schools programme, Together Trust learners will be provided with numerous STEM activities and career opportunities \u2013 the event onboard the Flying Scotsman is the first example of this collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jess Bates, Atkins Network Rail Client Account Director and the leader of the first Engineering Governors for Schools Programme set up the partnership and event through her position as Governor at Bridge College, one of the Together Trust\u2019s educational settings. She said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was an absolute joy to connect 85 learners and staff from the Together Trust with the journey on the Flying Scotsman. To see the smiles, hear the curiosity, facilitate integration with wider society and help them realise that the railway is a place for everyone; regardless of walk of life, gender or disability \u2013 it is all at the heart of why I became a STEM Governor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Improving accessibility to the railway is something I\u2019m incredibly passionate about and I will continue to facilitate conversations with the learners at the Together Trust about how we create a modern, inclusive railway that is reflective of society. That includes bringing in experts from the wider Atkins business and using my industry contacts to engage in dialogue about rail reform directly with the people that matter.
