After moving from mainstream to an SEN school at the end of Year 9, Phoenix settled well and remained at that school until\u00a0he\u00a0finished in Year 11.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that\u00a0point, his\u00a0family faced a daunting challenge finding an education setting that could truly meet\u00a0his\u00a0needs.\u00a0Phoenix is academically very able, had two GCSE and 3 BTECHs and, at that time,\u00a0had aspirations\u00a0to study media, but also had needs that\u00a0required\u00a0tailored support.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A mainstream college was decided upon with support.\u00a0However,\u00a0a number of\u00a0challenges relating to mainstream college could not be overcome, and it was decided that a specialist FE (further education) setting was needed instead.\u00a0Following the\u00a0bad experience\u00a0with the mainstream setting,\u00a0Phoenix decided media\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0for\u00a0him\u00a0and\u00a0now wants to have a career in technical theatre.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We spoke with Phoenix\u2019s mum, Gail, about their journey from mainstream to specialist FE, the challenges along the way, and why specialist provision matters.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenges Before Joining Bridge College<\/strong>\u202f\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Phoenix\u2019s experience in mainstream education was rigid and inflexible. Despite his abilities, the local mainstream setting insisted on enrolling him on a Level 1 course and repeatedly said, \u201cAs a mainstream college, our expectation is\u2026.\u201d<\/em>\u202f\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They eventually admitted they couldn\u2019t provide the 1:1 support Phoenix needed. With only two SEN colleges in the city, options were limited. Phoenix\u2019s mum recalls:\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe wanted a setting that believed in Phoenix\u2019s potential. Bridge College stood out immediately. They said: \u2018We believe we can meet their needs.\u2019 That gave us hope.\u201d<\/em>\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Support That Made a Difference<\/strong>\u202f<\/em>\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

From the very first multidisciplinary meeting, the family felt reassured:\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll key staff were in one room, answering Phoenix\u2019s questions. Within an hour, we had a placement offer.\u201d<\/em>\u202f <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Bridge College tailored the curriculum to Phoenix\u2019s needs, offering flexibility and variety. His programme includes active roles around college, therapy provision like hydrotherapy and rebound, and a strong focus on inclusion.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since joining Bridge, Phoenix has grown in confidence, emotional regulation, and social engagement.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n
