This support empowers students to become more independent and actively engage in everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We embrace a total communication approach, recognising and valuing all forms of communication. Effective communication is essential for personal development, learning, and building relationships. By nurturing each student\u2019s ability to express themselves, we help them grow in confidence and connect more meaningfully with the world around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We understand how transformative the right communication support can be, and we\u2019re excited to share the incredible work happening at Bridge College. We invited our SaLT team to answer some key questions about their work and its impact on students and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do students communicate at Bridge College?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bridge College uses&nbsp;<strong>Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)<\/strong>&nbsp;to promote independence and reduce frustration caused by communication barriers. AAC supports language development, social interaction, and improves quality of life by enabling students to participate more fully in college life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two types of AAC: Unaided and Aided.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"947\" height=\"904\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.togethertrust.org.uk\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/10\/aided-and-unaided.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-796\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.togethertrust.org.uk\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/10\/aided-and-unaided.png 947w, https:\/\/cdn.togethertrust.org.uk\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/10\/aided-and-unaided-300x286.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.togethertrust.org.uk\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/10\/aided-and-unaided-768x733.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 947px) 100vw, 947px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Our students use a wide variety of communication methods, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gestures<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Facial expressions<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Body movements and language<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vocalisations<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Speech<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Makaton signing<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Communication books<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Communication devices<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Makaton<\/strong>&nbsp;is a sign and symbol system that supports spoken language. Signs are used alongside speech, following the order of spoken words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vocalisations<\/strong>&nbsp;refer to sounds or noises that aren\u2019t recognisable as speech but still serve a communicative purpose\u2014such as gaining attention or expressing refusal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Communication books<\/strong>&nbsp;are paper-based tools that support interaction. These can range from a few symbols per page to up to 40 symbols across a two-page spread. At Bridge College, we create&nbsp;<em>Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD)<\/em>&nbsp;books and bespoke versions tailored to individual student needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Communication devices<\/strong>&nbsp;are electronic tools with specialised software that support communication. We gather information about the student\u2019s communication needs and create a&nbsp;<strong>communication passport<\/strong>&nbsp;to help staff prepare for their arrival and provide immediate support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the first 6 to 12 weeks, we conduct a&nbsp;<strong>baseline assessment<\/strong>. This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Observations during sessions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One-to-one assessments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discussions with students (where appropriate) about their understanding of speech therapy and personal goals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim is to identify each student\u2019s communication strengths, any barriers to learning, and the level of support needed from the SaLT team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the baseline period, communication goals are set in collaboration with tutors and reviewed each term. After a successful trial, he received a communication device through funding. With support, he now uses the device to ask for staff by name, eliminating guesswork and improving clarity. Recently, he was able to tell staff he had a headache and wanted to see the college nurse, something he couldn\u2019t have communicated before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-tt-teal-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7fb5e2f2453c9db149f234800003fb14\"><strong>OS\u2019s Progress<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>OS joined Bridge College this year without any communication resources. He was quickly identified as a candidate for a communication book. He now independently turns pages to find familiar symbols and make requests, such as asking to go on the swing, go outside, or get a drink.
