Springtime in bloom

Allie, working with Steven and volunteer Pam

CYCES recently welcomed local watercolour artist Allie Pottinger, who paints a variety of topics including flowers, architecture, landscapes and illustrations for magazines, prints and cards. Allie kindly volunteered her time and expertise to join the school’s art department and ran a special workshop for a small group of pupils.

The school provides education for pupils who are some of the most disadvantaged of all and have behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. One of the most important roles the school has is to re-engage pupils in learning.

The theme for Allie’s workshop was ‘Springtime in bloom’ and proved very successful. Staff and pupils alike enjoyed the experience and learned a variety of techniques that Allie uses in her work. Pupils studied a selection of spring flowers and with instruction and guidance from Allie produced wonderful watercolour paintings of daffodils. Thanks also goes to Pam Hayden, a regular volunteer in the school’s Art Department who helped out on the day.

Speaking about the experience, Allie said; “I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and met some great students and staff. The children all perserved and produced some really creative pictures. I saw how art is truly a wonderful therapy. The children were engaged and I was so impressed at the way that they focused and worked hard to produce pictures. It was an honour to work with the Together Trust, I had a genuinely inspirational time.”

World Autism Awareness Day – 2nd April

News-Bolton-Wanderers-and-local-charities-make-a-winning-team-together

Staff and service users from the Together Trust and other local charities joined players from Bolton Wanderers recently to help raise the profile of World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD), which will take place on 2nd April.

The Together Trust, ASGMA (Autistic Society Greater Manchester Area), Autism Initiatives, Families Connected and Wirral Autistic Society are working together to raise awareness about the common difficulties faced by people with autism. Excited service users, pupils and staff from the charities were met by players Grétar Steinsson and Marvin Sordell before the hotly anticipated match against Blackburn Rovers.

Phil Mason, Club Chaplain of Bolton Wanderers, added; “It is very important at our club for us to support local charities, and the organisations here today provide fantastic services and facilities to support people with autism spectrum conditions and we are pleased to play our part and support this initiative.”

Speaking on behalf of the group of charities, David Marriott, Chief Executive of the Together Trust, said; “World Autism Awareness Day is a really important event in our calendar, not only to ensure that those who have autism spectrum conditions can find the help and support that they need, but also to bring awareness to the wider community. Everyone has had a fantastic day thanks to the support of the players and management at Bolton Wanderers.”

As part of their work, the charities have also produced a leaflet designed to inform people about the varying levels of autism and some of the challenges individuals with the condition have to overcome every day. Click here to download the WAAD leaflet.

What an inspiration!

Together Trust fundraisers Hannah Wood-Townend and Lara Howard

Four young friends from Stockport have raised a fantastic £70.85 by holding a 12 hour sponsored silence during a sleepover party.

Hannah Wood-Townend (12), Lara Howard (13) and two other friends who attend St Annes RC High School decided to take up the challenge with support from friends and family. This was by no means an easy task for these girls (as you can imagine!).

Now fully recovered from their ordeal they have donated the money to young people in care at the Together Trust.

We are very grateful for their support.
