Speech therapy

The development of communication skills is vital to all young people within the autism spectrum.

The Inscape Centre for Autism (INCA) recognises this by providing speech and language therapy services. We provide these to local authorities, schools and directly to parents seeking speech and language services for their child.

We can offer:

  • Special assessment of communication
  • Therapy programmes
  • Therapy sessions
  • Reports.

Specialist knowledge and skills

All our therapists have extensive experience of working with children and young people with autism. Areas of specialist knowledge provided by the team include:

  • Using play to develop communication
  • Implementing the Picture Exchange Communication System
  • Developing TEACCH programmes
  • Writing Social Stories and using Comic Strip Conversations
  • Addressing pragmatic language problems
  • Running social skills groups for young people with different levels of communication
  • Using the Talkabout approach
  • Working through Narrative Therapy
  • Developing Augmentative Communication approaches
  • Helping children and young people to understand their diagnosis.

Individual assessments

Individual assessment usually starts with informal observations of the young person at home or in school. We send a leaflet to the child or young person to prepare them for the visit, the information presented being matched to their level of understanding.

More detailed observations and standardised assessments may then be carried out at INCA according to each individual’s needs. Parents and families are fully included in the process and receive a detailed written report. After that, where appropriate, we can provide therapy programmes and direct therapy for the young person.
